Over the last few years, hydroponics, or growing plants without soil – typically in water — has become an increasingly popular way to grow food. Hydroponics grow boxes are specifically created for growing plants indoors. Grow boxes often make it easy for beginners to jump into hydroponics by providing with light, a system for getting nutrients to the plants, timers, growing medium and anything else needed to grow plants in a self-contained environment. Hydroponics grow box kits are shipped already assembled, so all savvy gardeners must do is sprout the seeds in order to begin.

Although handy gardeners can build hydroponic grow box systems fromscratch, pre-packaged grow boxes take the guesswork out of setup and maintenance. The main difference in the available grow boxes is the type of hydroponics system included. There are two main types: active and passive. The active types use a pump to deliver nutrients to plants, while passive types feed plants via the growing medium.

Optimal delivery of nutrients to plants allows them to grow 30 to 50 percent faster and have higher yields. Light, water and nutrients, not soil, are three essential elements needed for growth. With hydroponic grow boxes, nutrients are delivered on a timed basis, supplied in a water solution that passes regularly over roots or via periodic flooding. Extra oxygen in growing mediums helps stimulate root growth. Thus, plants do not have to search for nutrients as they do in soil. Instead, this conserved energy is put towards growth and producing fruit.

Soil-borne pests and pathogens can retard plant growth through disease. Hydroponically grown plants have fewer problems with bug infestations, funguses and disease. Growing mediums are not conducive to weed growth, meaning undesirable plants are not competing for food and water. Other soil problems, such as poor structure, poor drainage and non-uniform texture, all of which can be detrimental to plant growth, are not present in a consistently maintained growing medium.

Because hydroponic box systems constantly reuse nutrient solutions, the use of water is greatly reduced when compared with traditional gardening. As these systems are closed and most nutrients end up being used by the plants, leaching of fertilizers into the environment is rare. The indoor growing environment along with the soil-less growing medium necessitates little to no use of pesticides. Topsoil erosion is a moot point as no topsoil is used.

No soil preparation is needed so crop turnaround time is faster. Indoor growth in cold environments allows for the production of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables on a year-round basis.
