Stars of the Garden: Resident Butterflies of Pinellas County is available in the lawn and garden section of the Pinellas County Extension Service website. This seventy-page online/PDF resource, compiled by Ellen Mahany, Master Gardener Volunteer, focuses on information about our county’s butterflies, including:
- Special characteristics of butterflies
- A comparison of butterflies and moths, their Lepidopteran cousins
- Unique features of each of the five butterfly families residing in Pinellas County
- Information and photographs for individual species found in our county
This publication is designed to help gardeners choose butterflies compatible with a residential garden’s particular ecosystem and to describe butterflies that can be viewed in reserves and the wilderness.
The Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences (IFAS) and the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) are the main research sources for this document.
